Tesla Powerwall home battery in Canada is $15,000 and $20,000
(This article was published in October 2016. Prices might have changed since publication date.)
More than a year ago, Tesla announced a new product : the Powerwall home battery. Tesla sells the Powerwall $3,000 ($US) before installation.
Powerwall is a home battery that charges using electricity generated from solar panels, or when utility rates are low, and powers your home in the evening. It also fortifies your home against power outages by providing a backup electricity supply. Automated, compact and simple to install, Powerwall offers independence from the utility grid and the security of an emergency backup.
In Canada, Tesla distributes the Powerwall through NRStor Inc. NRStor Inc then redistributes through MPower Energy Solutions, one of its divisions. MPower has been contacting (telephone and email) Canadians who have signed up with Tesla Powerwall.
The price in Canada is highly priced. Tesla Powerwall is priced at $10,000 (vs 3000 in $US). Tesla Dual Powerwall is priced at $15,000 (vs 6,000 in $US). The installation is about $5,000.
Is this another demonstration that the price structure in Canada is not in our favour ?
Here is the email from MPower :
Thank you for your interest in MPOWER Energy Solutions featuring the Tesla Powerwall.
Who We Are:
MPOWER Energy Solutions was created to help accelerate Canada’s transition to a clean energy future by delivering smart, reliable energy services and solutions.
From our head office in Toronto, we have built a dedicated service and support network to deliver our exciting new product to Canadian homeowners and small business.
Our Solution:
Our automated and fully-integrated green energy solution is helping homeowners and small businesses further their sustainability goals and reduce their carbon footprint, today.
The MPOWER Solution includes a sophisticated combination of equipment, including:
· Tesla Powerwall – A Single or Dual Powerwalls to store the energy needed to deliver safe and effective power;
· Inverter – for converting electricity from direct current (like the energy produced by Powerwall or by a solar panel) to alternating current (which is the power you get from your electrical outlets);
· Meter – to monitor your connection to the electricity grid;
· Secondary Panel + Autotransformer to isolate power essential appliances needed in a power outage..
Today’s Smart Energy:
The MPOWER Solution can be connected to solar panels to charge the battery during the day. Without solar panels, it can reduce energy bills by charging the battery when energy costs are at their lowest and strategically shifting power use to battery power when rates are higher.
A standard installation of a Single Powerwall can typically power your fridge, furnace fan, Wi-Fi, lights for 6 rooms, four cellphones and two laptops for 24 hours, providing security, safety and peace of mind during an outage. With a Dual Powerwall Solution you can backup these appliances for a longer period of time or include additional appliances. A MPOWER installer will work with you to determine the right solution for your property.
Installation & Pricing:
With sophisticated technology at its core, our system requires installation by a licensed electrician with both MPOWER and Tesla certification. Every installation is supported by our dedicated service team who will manage every step of your installation so you know your Solution is correctly configured and safely installed.
· A Single Powerwall Solution investment is
o $10,000 for equipment plus
o additional installation and utility grid commissioning and electrical safety authority certification costs (on average $5,000)
· A Dual Powerwall Solution investment is
o $15,000 for equipment plus
o additional installation and utility grid commissioning and electrical safety authority certification costs (on average $5,000)
Let our team help you determine what Solution is right for you.
If you still have questions or need more information about your specific requirements, send us an email with your availability over the next week, and someone from our service team will contact you. We’re here to help answer your questions and discuss how you can take the next step in owning the smart, clean energy of tomorrow, today.

Even taking into account the state of the Canadian dollar, the price difference between Canada and the US is ridiculous! I’m so tired of feeling ripped off up here.
That s what it is ripped off , there is no reason for such a price different , people forget that ‘s already retail price in the USA so profit is all ready in it
How come nobody asked Musk about that?
I am developing new mining exploration equipment that will use a battery system. Tesla Power walls and other Tesla power systems could meet our specifications. Your business plan for selling Tesla power products is a form of outdated thinking that will not last. I suggest your investors walk ASAP.
A local electrical contractor orders a powerwall for you and makes 5 to 10 percent on the $3000 US price plus the exchange rate. Other attachments are charged in a similar way. He is certified and install it for you at competitive electrician prices.
This is what social media will be informing all Canadians. The high markup will never work.
Hello Albert!
Can you suggest anyone?
Thank you.
I so strongly agree with the discus about the Canadian mark up .I was so happy to see the start up of the tesla company and its efforts in green renewable. energy .Now all that excitement has been damaged knowing tesla would team up with a company that would rip off its own country men like that . I sure hope tesla comes up with an alternative or knocks some sense into MPOWER ENERGY SOLUTIONS.
Just makes it a non starter doesn’t it!
Elon Musk will drop these guys as distributors. Solar PV + battery (or battery only) works when the cost per KWh leaves a reasonable payback period. What these guys have done is roll the clock back 10-years when it cost $1,000 per KWh. If you are investigating this technology you know it’s $200/KWh now. Product will never come off the shelf at these rip-off prices. I can’t wait for the next home show in my area and I see this kind of crap. $5,000 for installation…really!
You are Sooooo correct. It does not coincide with the Tesla philosophy. Panasonic also has a storage unit available now but no idea if it is available in Canada or its costs. Same tech just not packaged as fancy.
Two electriciansWorking on a system exactly like tesla Mercedes even better for a Canadian market and price will be a lot cheaper
These Batteries are a Total Rip Off for sure! The price has to come a way down to even discuss such a venture!
I realize this article is a couple of years old, but it seems to get some traction still. So maybe you should update your numbers. The Powerwall isn’t $3000USD, it’s $6600 USD ($8450CAD), which means we pay $500 CAD more at $9060 CAD. Doesn’t mean it’s affordable or practical as I’ve read using it in Ontario just to offset peak energy prices would take 11 years to break even. But we aren’t being ripped off as Canadians, well, we’re paying $500 more, but that could just be a buffer for the exchange rate.
There are a series of YouTube videos showing how to make your own for a fraction of the Mpower price.
How about driving to Buffalo and buying the batteries there. Even paying duty will still make the product much more economical.
Go to the Tesla Web site and you will see real U.S. cost….the 6,000.00$ is not realistic….Do some research and you will find that the Canadian prices line up pretty well with the U.S. costs. Still an expensive option for power. Also it is not known when Tesla’s roofing tiles will be available in Canada and I have no idea what they will be worth. Tesla Canada says within the year….2019…..now. But?
This article was written a long time ago. Let us know what are the new prices for both Powerwall and its installation.
Hi Ron. I am trying to talk to someone that is at Tesla, or an installer of the Powerwall. Do you know anyone, or a company that can install the Powerwall in BC, or something similar for a better price? All I need is answers. I have to have a backup system installed ( orders by the City for my Basement suit… long story short)
I will follow up with the Tesla peeps again. They have been no help at all for the last several times I have tried contacting them.
I put a deposit down for the Tesla Powerwall over one and a half years ago. I was Impressed with the price figuring the Canadian dollar being about .65 -.75 to the American dollar.
So 3000 x 35% = 4050
I understand Installation and other equipment costs… plus taxes. I guessed about 10,000- 12,000 all in.
Now I am looking at these prices and I AM NOT HAPPY!!! Another thing is I have tried to reach somebody to help me and tell me what’s going on….. I have not heard from anyone. This is not being handled well. I may just want my deposit back!!!
Doug,
This article was written a long time ago. Prices have probably been modified since. Let us know what are the prices now. Keep researching.
did you get your deposit back yet? I am waiting too.
I have a feeling one of the ways Tesla was allowed to sell in Canada is buy charging almost twice that they are in the US. This is not Tesla’s fault. Its the fault of Canadian corporations and Corrupt politicans across the aisles in Canada. The hydro cos along with the politicians are bleeding us dry. OH CANADA INDEED!
Tesla’s pricing is on the website $9,250 CAD each Powerwall, plus $1550 for supporting hardware, plus installation. $20,050 plus installation for 2, so maybe $25,000 all in?
We can’t possibly justify one based on payback vs. just buying grid electricity at night (17 years or so?). The value would have to come from having electricity in a grid outage to run a sump pump, furnace, freezer/fridge.
Price in California is $6,500 each + $1100 for supporting hardware. Less a $1,000 rebate if you have been affected by wildfires (CNBC, October 28, 2019). The $3,000 figure might have been for the original, smaller battery, and after some combination of U.S. federal and state rebates or tax breaks, or Elon’s smoking something and tweeting a number..
Do Canadians get rebates from our governments?
Ontario or Canada.
