Cornwall (Ontario) is Super-Electrified
I took several trips from Ottawa, Ontario (Rockland) to Cornwall, Ontario after hearing the news that Ontario’s second Tesla Supercharger installation broke ground.
The Supercharger is located at the Ramada hotel – adjacent to a roundabout. At first, I missed the entrance. Driving south from the 401 – there isn’t an easy way to access the parking lot. A misleading side street (Ninth St West) that seems to lead to the Ramada, took me for a spin, elsewhere. You have to go through the roundabout to actually turn into the hotel.
I was only able to visit after regular working hours, and was not able to talk to the construction crew. There was a lot of progress done in a relatively short period of time. The installation took approximately 25 days.
Driving to the Albany NY supercharger is doable, using this route through the park (348km). But I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone with a 60kWh Model S. I’ve done it twice in my 85kWh Model S, with about 50km rated range remaining, and I would not dare attempt that trip in the winter. Luckily, there are more superchargers planned in the north-east to help alleviate this situation.
Driving to the new Toronto supercharger is relatively far (419km), and driving to the forthcoming Drummondville, Québec Supercharger will be ~230km, a nice distance between Superchargers, in Canada, taking into consideration the 60kWh pack range, and the cold climate.
The Cornwall Supercharger seems to have “all the fix-ins” of the latest Supercharger design; new LED backlit stalls and enough capacity to charge the latest battery pack versions. With a total of 6 stalls, 24/7 access and a handful of restaurants nearby, this much needed Supercharger is a great step towards connecting Canada’s major eastern cities.
